kodak, been around for ever.........
I have a Kodak Z710 that I LOVE. It's not super small, but it is small enough that I can always carry it in my purse and it's easy to operate with one hand. It is a great point & shoot camera but also has a lot of features you can control, if you want. It uses an SD card - my 2 GB one holds about 1000 pix, at best resolution. I use rechargeable batteries and they have a good, fairly long life. It's not the best for super-fast action, or real low light (without a tripod), but it a really good all-around camera. I bought it to take on a 17 day UK trip and took over 8000 pix - I got some really great ones, too!
It also takes video! Source(s): My experience
The BEST? Canon Powershot!

and for great cameras w/ REALLY good prices...
http://www.bhphotovideo.com
(great place!! i went there in NY over christmas break!)
I have a Samsung Digimax (i think) and it's great! (I would LOVE to have a Cannon or Nikon, but those are so expensive.) You might want to look into buying one second hand. Alot of times there's nothing wrong with them, and you get a discount. I would try Ebay.
sony
My friend has a sony cybershot and I want to get one too. It's a thin camera that has a large screen and takes hours of videos too.
I have always liked and never had any problems with Olympus.
FE 280 or FE 300
